As we made our way from Burgos to Salamanca we passed a town called Torquemada. It was therefore appropriate when we arrived that a special exhibition of Ancient Instruments of Torture was showing. There were some very vicious looking contraptions though the Spanish play down their role in the torture stakes preferring to blame France in particular and Germany for the worst excesses. No surprise there! Anyway it was horrific whichever way you looked; almost as scary as watching the England cricket team.
Salamanca is notable especially for its' Plaza Major, below, shown at day and at night, sadly both times raining.
It also boasts two cathedrals built right next to each other and linked by huge doors and gates. And guess what Bill's at it again. At least the same man responsible for the Burgos audio guide now takes us round Salamanca cathedrals.
What makes me wonder whether it is Nighy is the reading of the script. Surely he would realise that John Psul 11 was not beautified soon after he died; and his pronunciation of Titian relies more on 1st form humour than the accepted way. Or maybe he is being ironic and happy to take his fee. Or maybe it is someone else entirely. Any more cathedral gossip, I'll let you know.
Anyway, no mistaking the two cathedrals' majesty
More temptingly for us, Salamanca is also the centre for Jamon Iberico and other sorts of dried hams and pork. Sensational taste and worth seeking out if in the area. This is one of the great things for us about these trips. We can stop off, campsite permitting, wherever we want and for as long as we want. This site was a short bus ride into town and had its resident nesting stork and baby on a water tower close by.
So Salamanca is behind us and a very pretty, lively, university city it was too. Next stop is Caceres. Expect a midweek post on that. Thanks for those who have commented by e-mail. Please feel free to do so or become a follower. It is always nice to know somebody is reading this. We are hoping the weather will get better sooner rather than later and it will be shorts on, shirts off.
Buenos Tardes
